LSU’s Integrative Community Studies (ICS) Program will rely on the inclusive spirit of the LSU and Baton Rouge communities to best serve its candidates. A critical component of the two-year educational certificate program for adults with developmental disabilities is the ongoing mentorship of existing students and faculty. Residents will be immersed into Tiger life by walking the Quad, studying in the library, relaxing in a residential setting, and attending many university activities and functions. All mentors are expected to model appropriate academic and social behaviors while interacting with ICS residents. There are two types of mentors: academic / social mentors, and independent living assistants.
Academic / Social Mentor
Academic/Social Mentors provide academic and social supports to residents as they progress through the program.
Qualifications:
- Full-time student at LSU
- In good standing with LSU
- Desire to work with individuals with intellectual disabilities
- Willing to submit to background check and attend Mentor Training prior to employment

Independent Living Assistants
Independent Living Assistants will be housed in the same apartment as the candidates and are primarily responsible for morning and evening supports. ICS residents live together in a four-bedroom apartment alongside an independent living assistant.
Qualifications:
- LSU student in good academic standing
- Ability to maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average
- Understanding of LSU housing and on-campus food operations
- Ability to maintain a positive and enriching living environment
- Ability to communicate with diverse populations
- Ability to model respect of university environment by respecting property, picking up trash, and actively support recycling and related university efforts
Job Description:
- Support the independent living component of Integrative Community Studies Program (ICS-LSU Community)
- Provide a living atmosphere that is comfortable and conducive to study, social interaction, and personal development
- Work with other ICS staff to promote a socially, culturally, and educationally enriching experience for students
- Be present and available at the housing unit in the mornings before and immediately after ICS programming to assist with planning for daily or evening activities
- Assist students with practicing independent living skills
- Maintain a positive working relationship with ICS director and staff
- Comply with all ICS administrative requests
